Day 1:
Departure from the small riding stable near our agriturismo Ca' Maddalena for the first riding day of the journey, about five hours in the saddle. The first part of the route crosses gentle hills, while the second part introduces us to the mountains. Overnight stay in a mountain village near Mt. Nerone.
Day 2:
In the first part of the day we climb along an old road, now similar to a tree-lined trail, passing around the Nerone massif on its north-west side.
When we leave the forest, the Apennine ridge between Marche, Romagna and Tuscany opens in front of us. This mountain range will be the setting for our week on horseback.
We then descend near Rifugio Corsini, continue down to the village of Serravalle di Carda and ride on to Acquapartita, where we stop for the night in a tented camp.
Day 3:
The third stage follows gravel roads, mule tracks and forest trails. There are no steep climbs, so this stage is not too demanding for our horses. We follow part of the Sentiero Italia route, enter the region of Umbria, reach the Bocca Serriola pass and then continue to Agriturismo La Casciara, where we spend the night.
Day 4:
Again we follow the Sentiero Italia, as we will in the next stages. This part of the journey passes mainly through beech forests and mountain trails that will be a little more challenging for our horses.
After crossing the Bocca Trabaria pass, the trail becomes steeper for a short time, then easier again, before descending to Rifugio Pian della Capanna in Tuscany, where we stay for the night.
Day 5:
This stage is easier, especially in the first part, and closer to towns and villages.
We descend to the town of Pieve Santo Stefano, ride through it, and then start climbing toward the Casentinesi Forest National Park. Our destination is the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna. We spend the night at a campsite in Chiusi della Verna.
Day 6:
The sixth stage is intentionally shorter so that we have time to visit the Sanctuary of La Verna.
We continue to Badia Prataglia, in the heart of the National Park, and then ride on to the campsite where we spend the night in tents.
Day 7:
The last day of our journey brings us to another important spiritual place: the Hermitage of Camaldoli.
We ride north along the border of the Sasso Fratino Integral Nature Reserve, between Romagna and Tuscany, until we reach Passo della Calla. From there it is a short ride to Rifugio Burraia, in the middle of one of the most beautiful forests in Italy, where large beech trees dominate the landscape.
