Day 1
Departure from
Ca' Maddalena at around 9:00 a.m., heading toward
Castelluccio di Norcia, arriving in time for lunch.
Upon arrival, a light lunch (sandwich) is shared with the group returning from their trek. In the afternoon, approximately
2.5 hours on horseback across the stunning and colorful
Plain of Castelluccio, reaching the accommodation units located near the former
Colle Le Cese Refuge, south of the plain (destroyed by the 2016 earthquake).
Day 2
The route follows the eastern ridge of the plain heading north (Belvedere Refuge area), reaching
Forca di Presta and descending toward
Arquata del Tronto.
After passing through what remains of the village, heavily affected by the earthquake, and crossing the old
Salaria Road, the trail climbs through chestnut woods to reach the
tent camp above the village of
Spelonga.
Day 3
Chestnut forests and, at higher elevations, beech woods dominate the first part of the day, together with the vast green meadows of the
Laga Mountains, especially during the ascent to the evocative
Macera della Morte.
Later, trails and grasslands give way to gravel and paved roads leading to the village of
Retrosi and its
Agricamping, near
Amatrice.
Day 4
Leaving the Amatrice area, the route climbs again alongside the peaks of the Laga Mountains, offering breathtaking views of
Lake Campotosto, with the
Gran Sasso range in the background.
The itinerary follows the lakeside (in June, due to high water levels, some shoreline sections are not accessible and road sections are used instead) toward
Tottea, then descends to overnight at the
Locanda del Cervo guesthouse.
Day 5
Forests dominate the day once again, with endless beech woods. Toward the end of the route, riders suddenly emerge into the heart of the
Gran Sasso massif, where the first rocky spires signal the proximity of the destination.
Stop in the mountain village of
Pietracamela.
Day 6
A demanding and spectacular day: ascent through the
Val Maone and full crossing of the Gran Sasso range from north to south via the
Portella Pass at
2,260 m.
Stop at
Campo Imperatore facilities, followed by a ride across the high plateau to reach
Racollo Refuge, set in the vast emptiness of the plain.
Day 7
Return to
Ca' Maddalena by support vehicles.
Trip extension
This itinerary can be
linked to the Sibillini Mountains trekking route, turning the experience into a
long horseback journey of approximately 15 days across some of the wildest and most spectacular areas of the central Apennines.
